Black August is a month-long commemoration of the Black liberation struggle, honoring political prisoners and all those who have sacrificed for Black freedom. Black August emerged from California’s prison system in the 1970s following the state assassination of Black Panther and political prisoner George Jackson, and in honor of his brother Jonathan Jackson. Its core principles — study, fast, train, fight — call on us to remember those who gave everything for liberation and to recommit ourselves to that struggle today.
