We mourn the loss of the beloved Bishop Lawrence L. Kirby, who passed away on August 14, 2026 🕊️

He was a pillar of the Racine community and has served as the Bishop of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, the oldest African-American majority congregation in Wisconsin, since 1981. As the leader of this ministry, Kirby developed relationships and bonds that will last for generations, while also leading the establishment of multiple public housing, worship, and child development facilities on the south side of Racine. 

Bishop Kirby preached sermons that united the Racine masses, as well as congregations in Africa, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean nations.

He will lie in state for 24 hours at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church (1120 Grand Ave in Racine) starting on Friday, August 28th at 7:00 am, followed by celebration of his life at Grace Church (3626 Hwy 31 in Racine) on Saturday, August 29, 2026 starting at 11:00 am. You may find his full obituary on draeger-langendorf.com under his name and the title “Transition & Triumph: The Kirby Story – Final Edition.”
